Ole Miss empties S Miss 5-0, making CWS 1st since ’14

HATTIESBURG, Mississippi (AP) — Hunter Elliott batted 10 in 7 1/3 shutout inniings, Jacob Gonzalez drove with an infield hit in the first heat and Mississippi won the Hattiesburg Super Regional with a 5-0 win over the No. 11 in Standings Bet Southern Mississippi on Sunday to advance to the College World Series.

Ole Miss (37-22) didn’t give a run to Southern Miss (47-19) and beat the Golden Eagles 10-0 on Saturday. The Rebels are returning to the CWS for the first time since 2014.

Elliott (4-2) only allowed three hits – all singles. He threw 97 pitches, 69 for strikes. Josh Mallitz allowed just a walk as he retired the last five batsmen.

The Rebels scored all the runs they would need in the bottom part of the fifth. Harris parted ways with Southern Miss starter Tanner Hall (9-3) to open the inning. Justin Bench’s one-off double put the runners in second and third place. Gonzalez hit a grounder to drive first at Harris. Bench scored and Gonzalez finished second on a wild field for the second heat. Kendall Graham met Gonzalez to make it 3-0.

Hayden Dunhurst hit the lead in sixth for a 4-0 lead on Bench’s two-out single. No. 9 hitter TJ McCants hit a two-out home run in the eighth solo to cap the scoring.

Hall allowed four runs with eight hits and one walk in 5 1/3 innings and knocked out six. The Golden Eagles’ only CWS appearance was in 2009.
